Craig Ruddy, Imago II
"“Imago II” is a continuation of a powerful body of work by Craig Ruddy inspired by the eternal cycle of birth, death and rebirth celebrated through the vitality and beauty of the human form. Imago is the scientific name given to the final adult stage of the pupa during metamorphosis; the moment when the pupa develops its sexuality and breaks free from the chrysalis.
“I do believe that this life we are living is a chrysalis for something far greater,” says the artist. “The works are a representation of the energetic uprising of the human spirit from cocoon state through chrysalis and to the burning bright star”.
In this series Ruddy employs acrylic and ink on sheets of glass and canvas to create an ethereal and breathtaking 3D effect of figures emerging and moving through his colourful palette.
Craig Ruddy is one of Australia’s most celebrated artists - winning the Archibald Prize and the People’s Choice in 2004 with his highly celebrated portrait of actor David Gulpilil. He was also a finalist in the 2006 and 2010 Archibald Prizes, winning People’s Choice for the second time last year with his striking backlit portrait of film maker Warwick Thornton, which he donated to the Gold Coast City Gallery.
